How to Report Misprints or Errors to Manga Publishers

How to report misprints or errors to manga publishers

I keep seeing posts about some misprints on r/MangaCollectors so let me share some of the best ones:

This post from a bookstore worker describes the conditions of manga from different publishers that arrive at their store.

1. Take pictures of the issue & share on social media

I don’t read The Promised Neverland, but the misprints showed up on my Twitter feed anyways. Take a picture, describe the issue and which series & volume is affected, and mention the publisher with their social media tag.

Most publishers do not have an active social media / marketing person besides Seven Seas and Viz, so they will most likely not respond. Sharing the info publicly on Twitter, Facebook group, Reddit, etc. will at least show that these kinds of things are happening.

2.  Give official feedback through Publishers contact forms

In order for manga publishers to have substantial evidence of an issue, the best way is to give them feedback about it through their email or contact forms. It lets them know that their current printer is sending out misprint copies to stores and if they get enough feedback through email documentation, they might eventually switch printers if this keeps happening.

One of the main complaints with publishers like Kodansha Comics and Viz is that their spines are often misaligned and sent out as sales copies. A lot of people deal with it now by either ordering several copies at once online and returning the least perfect copy (like if you have extra cash and buy on Amazon, which has free returns), or buy a copy online and exchange it in-store with a better copy (like at Barnes & Noble).

Publishers will most likely not give you a refund on spine alignment issues. You will probably have to sell it used if you cannot return or exchange it.

With all manga publishers, describe the issue, include the manga title and volume number, where you bought it from, and attach pictures as attachments or through an imgur link. If you could not return or exchange it with wherever you bought it from (Amazon, bookstore, comic shop, etc), you can also ask for a partial/full refund from them.

That should cover most of the big and smaller English publishers! Most of the time, a publisher will probably not reply even with a customer service quality concern.

What kind of misprints have you gotten when buying NEW manga published in English? Let me know in the comments!
